Biography

              Violinist MIRANDA LIU (born November 1996) has been praised by audiences and critics alike for her "perfect" (Oberbayerisches Volksblatt) and "brilliant" (Salzburger Nachrichten) technique, as well as for her mature and astounding interpretations. Born in California, the young virtuoso has been studying at the Mozarteum University Salzburg in the class of Prof. Paul Roczek since 2007, where she is a member of the Leopold Mozart Institute.  She has also been working privately with Prof. Eszter Perényi of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.  She began early musical studies on the piano with her mother, a Juilliard graduate, and subsequently received her first violin lessons by age four.  At age seven, she made her solo violin recital debut, followed by a solo debut with orchestra.  She currently divides her time between Europe and the USA.

Lauded by other musicians for her clear mind, vast repertoire, and über passion, Ms. Liu is already on her way to becoming one of the foremost musicians of her generation.  She has performed in hundreds of concerts as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the USA, Germany and Austria, as well as on concert stages in Switzerland, Belgium, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal, and England.  She performs in prestigious concert halls such as:  New York’s Carnegie Recital Hall, Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall, Providence's Veterans Memorial Auditorium and Salzburg's Wiener Saal, Solitär, and Carabinierisaal, among other venues.  She has also performed in numerous concerts held in European Castles.  Her solo performances have been televised and/or broadcasted on the radio in the USA, Austria, Slovenia, Belgium and Czech Republic.  Miranda Liu has collaborated with conductors such as David Itkin, Francisco Noya, Elisabeth Fuchs, Yukari Ishimoto, Kurt Sassmannshaus and Yoon Jae Lee, and has already performed as a soloist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, the Junge Philharmonie Salzburg, the Neues Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Starling Chamber Orchestra Cincinnati, the Old York Road Symphony, and the Main Line Chamber Orchestra, among others.  In March 2012, she will make her debut with the New World Symphony and Joshua Gersen. 

The recipient of numerous awards, she won 1st prize at the 2012 New World Symphony Young Artist Concerto Competition (Florida), 1 st prize at the 2011 Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition, 1st prize at the 2011 Las Vegas Philharmonic Young Artists' Competition, 1st prize at the 2009 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition (New York), 1st prize at the 2008 Old York Road Symphony Young Artist Competition (Pennsylvania), 1st prize at the 2005 Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra Youth in the Arts Competition (Pennsylvania), and 2nd prize at the 2011 International Competition for Young String Soloists Bischofszell (Switzerland).  She was also a past finalist of Philadelphia Orchestra’s Greenfield Competition, Concorso Ruggiero Ricci Salzburg, and The Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition, as the youngest participant.

Ms. Liu has participated in and performed at numerous international music festivals and academies, including:  International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove, Meadowmount School of Music, Sommerakademie PragWienBudapest (isa), Litomysl String Master Class, Summer Violin School Igor Ozim, Musica Mundi Chamber Music Festival, Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg, Meisterkurs Weinheim, Meisterkurs Musikhochschule Mannheim, IMAS Bückeburg Schloss, Oberlin College Baroque Performance Institute, Music Academy of the West, Indiana University Summer String Academy, and the MTAC New Music Festival.  She  has also had the opportunity to work with renowned violinists Ruggiero Ricci, Roman Nodel, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Igor Ozim, Liana Isakadze, Igor Oistrakh, Milan Vitek, Gerhard Schulz, Pierre Amoyal, Miriam Fried, Paul Biss, and others.  Additionally, she has participated in numerous master classes, including those given by Julia Fischer, Annick Roussin, Peter Lissauer, Eszter Haffner, Ana Baget, Denis Goldfeld, Esther Hoppe, Yoshiaki Shibata, Per Enoksson, Zvi Zeitlin, Kathleen Winkler and Sally Thomas.  Baroque master classes with Hiro Kurosaki, Jacqueline Ross, Marilyn McDonald and Marc Destrubé as well as chamber music master courses with Ivry Gitlis, Vladimir Perlin, Petras Kunca, Rainer Schmidt, Wolfgang Redik, Imre Rohmann, Walter Verdehr, Leonid Kerbel, Peter Salaff, Niels Ullner and Alasdair Tait, all add to her musical knowledge.

As a gifted composer, Liu’s compositions have been performed by the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra, Network for New Music, and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.  Her works are regularly performed in Salzburg, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.  She has worked with composers Günther Firlinger, Roberto Pace, and I’lana Cotton, and is a member of the International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM).
